Biote® Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
Spa Lumina is proud to be a certified Biote partner and provider clinic located here in Barrie, Ontario. We provide a full customized consultation with bloodwork to determine exactly what your body needs to rebalance your hormones and start feeling great again.
Hormonal balance is essential for a healthy body and mind. If you’re trying to understand why your energy level, sleep, weight, or sense of well-being is not what it used to be, consider Biote bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).
This easy pellet therapy is personalized to your body’s needs using compounded hormones that are identical in structure to those produced by the body.
What are hormones?
Hormones are natural substances the body produces to regulate major processes such as metabolism, sexual reproduction, and moods. Because of their essential role in the body, even the slightest hormonal imbalance can cause side effects.
What are bioidentical hormones?
Bioidentical hormones are made in a compounding pharmacy to match the structure of natural hormones, making them readily available to the body.
What are the symptoms of hormonal imbalance in females?
Women as young as 25 can be affected by hormone imbalances. Common symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Weight gain
- Trouble sleeping
- Mood swings, irritability, depression, or anxiety
- Night sweats
- Hot flashes or flushes
- Low libido
- Discomfort during intercourse
- Brain fog
- Decreased bone mass
Women who want to enhance their sexual experience may consider non-invasive Alma Duo® treatments that involve no pain or downtime.
What are the signs of hormonal imbalance in a man?
Men as young as their 30s experience symptoms of hormone imbalance, which commonly include:
- Low sex drive
- Fatigue
- Loss of muscle mass
- Increased body fat (especially around the waist)
- Mood changes such as irritability, anxiety, and feeling stressed
- Elevated blood sugar
- High cholesterol
How It Works
The Biote Method involves hormone replacement personalized for your body’s specific needs using pellet therapy. Tiny pellets, about the size of a grain of rice, are inserted under the skin during a simple office procedure.
As the pellets dissolve, they release a steady stream of hormones into your bloodstream that your body uses as needed. Over time, the pellets are completely absorbed, leaving nothing behind.
What To Expect
1. Meet with a trained health provider for a consultation to fill out our intake form, discuss your symptoms, review your health history, and learn how BHRT works.
2. Have a sample of your blood drawn and sent for in-depth analysis.
3. If you decide to proceed, meet with a provider to review your blood analysis results and order your custom-compounded hormone pellets.
4. Return to our office for pellet insertion. Your provider will first numb the insertion site (typically the upper buttocks), then create a small incision, insert the pellet and cover the site with a small bandage.
We will monitor your hormones with subsequent blood tests and insert new pellets as needed, typically every 3 to 5 months.
How long does it take to see results from bioidentical hormones?
Some BHRT patients may experience relief within as little as 4 weeks, but it may take up to 6 months or more to fully optimize hormone levels. Experiences vary with initial hormone deficiency, pellet dosage, and individual patient factors.
- Will bioidentical hormones help me lose belly fat?
-
While BHRT isn’t a weight loss treatment on its own, it can help address underlying hormonal issues that may contribute to stubborn fat, especially around the midsection. For patients looking to take a more targeted approach to weight loss, we may also recommend our Metabolic Balance® Weight Loss Program alongside BHRT for optimal results.
- How long can you stay on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?
-
There is no one-size-fits-all answer, as the duration of BHRT depends on your individual health, goals, and how well you respond to treatment. Some patients choose to stay on BHRT for several years, while others use it as a transitional therapy. Regular follow-ups and hormone level monitoring help ensure your treatment remains safe and effective over time.
- Which is better, HRT or bioidentical?
-
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a form of HRT that uses hormones structurally identical to those your body naturally produces. Many people prefer BHRT because it is plant-derived and tailored to your individual hormone levels. Traditional HRT may use synthetic hormones and is often prescribed in a one-size-fits-all format. BHRT offers a more personalized, natural-feeling approach with fewer reported side effects.
- Do you need a prescription for BHRT?
-
Yes, BHRT is a medical treatment that requires a prescription. Based on your lab results, your provider will create a custom treatment plan and prescribe the appropriate dosage for your needs.
- Who is a good candidate for Biote?
-
Biote is appropriate for both men and women experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance, such as fatigue, mood swings, weight gain, low libido, or difficulty sleeping. Ideal candidates are typically in perimenopause, menopause, or andropause (for men), and are looking for a more natural and personalized approach to hormone optimization. The best way to determine candidacy is to schedule a consultation and lab work.
- Does insurance cover Biote hormone therapy?
-
Biote hormone therapy is generally not covered by insurance, as it is considered an elective wellness treatment. However, some Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) may reimburse part of the cost. We recommend checking with your insurance provider and HSA/FSA administrator for details about your coverage options.
