Laser Hair Removal
Removal of unwanted hair has become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in recent years for women, as well as for an increasing number of men. At Spa Lumina, we offer laser hair removal in Barrie, Ontario, as an effective alternative to the more traditional (and often temporary) methods of hair removal such as depilatories, epilators, shavers, waxing kits, and electrolysis.
Laser hair removal is popular with clients from Orillia, Collingwood, and other Central Ontario communities. To learn more about your options, request your free consultation or give us a call at (705) 721-7775.
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal systems gently remove unwanted hair. While Dermatologic Surgeons continue to research the exact science of laser hair removal, it appears that the light energy causes thermal injury to the hair follicle. This occurs because laser light is converted into heat as it passes through the skin and is absorbed in the target pigment melanin found in the hair follicle. When the temperature reaches a high enough level in a hair follicle during its active phase, the targeted hair structures are disabled, thus inhibiting hair re-growth.
Laser hair removal is a non-invasive method of photoepilation, which does not require needles or messy chemical creams. Since thousands of hairs can be zapped in a single treatment session, large areas like the back, shoulders, arms and legs can be effectively and efficiently treated.
Why should I choose Spa Lumina for laser hair removal?
In Canada, lasers are NOT licensed by the Canadian government. In essence, anyone can purchase a laser and perform laser hair removal without any qualifications. At Spa Lumina, all laser treatments are medically supervised by our Doctor. Clients will have a consultation with a certified technician first, and then Doctor will review and confirm the settings best suited for you.
At Spa Lumina, we only use the best lasers for hair removal, the Cutera Xeo CoolGlide and the Alma Soprano Ice Platinum.

Lasers generates a pulse of intense, concentrated light which is directed through a small, cooled hand piece which is gently applied to the treatment site. This laser energy passes through the skin to the hair follicle, where the energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair and hair follicle, causing selective damage to the hair root without damaging delicate pores and structures of the skin. The laser is pulsed, or “turned on”, for only a fraction of a second. Our staff will carefully determine the duration of the pulses so that laser energy will be absorbed by the hair follicle without transferring excessive heat to the surrounding skin.
Some of the hair which was in the treated follicles is wiped off immediately after treatment, and the rest are shed over the next 2 to 3 weeks. The hair roots which have been destroyed are reabsorbed by the body.
Occasionally people experience a snapping sensation or a mild sting. Some clients do find that taking Advil or Tylenol before the procedure does help.

Laser hair removal is convenient, safe and efficient. While no laser can guarantee hair-free skin, lasers will remove up to 70 – 90% of hair within 6-8 treatments. Just imagine no longer needing to dedicate extra time for shaving or scheduling time for waxing appointments. Some people do require touch up treatments a few times a year following the completion of a package of 8 treatments.
How long to see results after treatment?
Slower hair growth and reduction can be seen after 4- 5 treatments.
Is the treatment safe?
The surface of the skin is protected by a gold-plated cooling head which glides over the skin (CoolGlide) half a second before the laser beam. This selectivity helps to protect the skin, while effectively treating the unwanted hair.
Will I feel any pain during treatment?
Occasionally people experience a snapping sensation or mild sting. Some clients do find that taking Advil or Tylenol before the procedure does help.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does laser hair removal permanently remove hair?
No, but the treatment puts the hair follicles in a state of dormancy for a long period of time—much longer than with shaving and waxing. When the hairs do grow back, they’ll be lighter, finer, and fewer.
What happens if I stop laser hair removal before the suggested round of sessions is completed?
You won’t get the desired results. The laser targets hair follicles during their growth phase, also known as the anagen phase. However, not all hair follicles are in the same phase at the same time. This is why you need multiple sessions to effectively treat all hairs in a given area.
Do you shave before laser hair removal?
Yes, you should shave the treatment area within 24 hours of your appointment. Shaving enables the laser energy to more efficiently reach the melanin in the hair follicles.
Does laser hair removal remove ingrown hairs?
Yes, laser hair removal is highly effective for treating ingrown hair. By destroying the hair follicle, it removes the hair. You’ll need periodic treatments to maintain the results.
Why can’t you take a hot shower following laser hair removal?
Hot showers increase blood flow to the surface of your skin, causing swelling and irritation in the treatment area. This reduces the treatment’s effectiveness.
Does laser hair removal remove strawberry legs?
Yes. Strawberry legs occur when hair follicles or pores are clogged with dirt, dead skin, bacteria, or oil. By destroying the hair follicles, there is no place for debris to accumulate.
